Berkeley College opened a professional boutique for students who want to dress to impress when interviewing for a job. The Professional Clothing Boutique and Resource Center is a hub for all things job market related.
College is incredibly expensive. The cost of tuition of state colleges alone averaged $9,970 dollars for in-state tuition and $25,620 for out-of-state students. Plus, you need to pay for a place to stay and food, at least. So it should come to no surprise that a lot of students cannot afford to have a full professional wardrobe, especially before getting a job.
Many universities and colleges realized this and decided to set up different events in which you could buy professional clothing for cheaper. But, Berkeley College took it to the next level opening a boutique on their campus.
The boutique is largely based on donations and students get to find their power outfits and keep them!
The idea behind the boutique stemmed from the realization that a lot of students were not going to interviews or applying for a job simply because they could not afford an outfit for that initial interview.
“They were very ashamed and insecure that they did not have the funds to afford professional attire and many didn’t immediately inform us of this issue,” said Earl Brown, Campus Operating Officer. Once we realized that this was a major student issue, we decided to transform a section of our Career Services Center into a boutique where students could come and take-to-own clothes for their job interviews and events.”
By allowing students to just come in, take their clothes home and get the jobs, they can really start building their own professional wardrobe.
This is just one of the programs that the Professional Clothing Boutique and Resource Center offers. They help students with anything from building their resume to holding mock interviews so they can practice.
As a general rule, if you feel good you are more comfortable and confident, which could be the reason why you stand out in the job market. So, this boutique is really giving students the confidence they need to take on the world.0
