Graduation is officially less than two months away and I’m sure that every classroom in the school has a countdown on the board specifically for the seniors. If there’s one thing I could tell each and every one of you, it’s to enjoy it, to remember it, and to slow down. I couldn’t wait to get out, to graduate, to move on, and to be free of my high school and all the drama that was in those hallways. What I didn’t realize until afterwards was that it will never be the same.
You might read that and say, yeah duh? But the day you walk out that door after your last class is the last time it will ever be like that. You’ll have your finals and your prom. You’ll have your graduation ceremony and your after grad parties. You might go to senior week and you’ll probably spend the entire summer working with your best friends and counting down the days until move in day at your dream school.
Right now focus on the long list of lasts and appreciate every single one of them.
Right now it seriously feels like it will be years before finals are finished and summer vacation starts, but it’s going to fly by. There’s going to be a long list of firsts as you get ready for college, or whatever you’ve decided to pursue come fall. But right now focus on the long list of lasts and appreciate every single one of them. The last time you study for a test with your best friends, the last time you meet up for coffee before school, the last swim meet or lacrosse game that you’ll get to compete in, the last time you walk down the hall with the same group of people that you’ve loved since you were just a clueless little kid. Enjoy every moment of it because it will be gone before you know it.
Appreciate it and don’t take it for granted. As I count down the days to the start of my summer vacation, after finishing my freshmen year of college, I realize more and more how it will never be the same. You’ll stay in touch with your friends and see them when you’re in town of course but you’ll never be able to run down the hall after third period to tell your girlfriends all the drama that they missed since the last time you guys talked, barely an hour ago.
People say that the older you get the faster time passes and apparently they’re right.
People say that the older you get the faster time passes and apparently they’re right. The first day of my senior year feels like it could have been yesterday.
I hope that you have the time of your lives and that you ace all of your finals. I hope that you sing and dance your hearts out at your senior prom. I hope that you walk across that stage in your cap and gown while your parents cheer so loudly that you turn as red as a lobster from embarrassment. I hope that you eat your weight in cupcakes decorated with “2016” icing on top. And I hope you have the best summer vacation yet.
