Work at Target? Absolutely, and Here is Why.

Target is kind of the best place in the entire world. Like fellow Metiza gal Troyce, I also grew up in the brightly lit aisles at my local Target. A few months ago, I was looking for a new job and my mom suggested that I apply at literally my favorite store in the world (I’m sure you can see where this is going). I mean, in my interview, when asked why I wanted to work there, I couldn’t help but shriek out an excited “I love Target!” I was offered a job on the beauty team, which was a bit too perfect considering how much I love makeup.

I’ve been working at Target for about three months, and I want to put into words what an amazing workplace it is for teenagers, and why you should definitely consider applying if you’re looking for some extra cash.

Above all else, the main reason I love to work at Target is because it is such a progressive and accepting environment.

The first and only plus-sized mannequin I’ve ever seen in real life was found in a Target in New Jersey, and this is just one example of what a welcoming place it is.

While all of my previous jobs have been for “equal opportunity employers”, I have never been exposed to such diversity until I started working at Target. The beautiful thing about the team at my store is that there are people of every race, age, body type, gender, sexual orientation, and experience level. Only at Target will you find managers with visible tattoos and cashiers with blue hair.

I love this kind of work environment because there are so many opportunities to work with people you never would have met otherwise.

Coming from workplaces where I have felt judged for my weight and how I choose to do my makeup (I know my eyebrows are dark- thank you, management), this has been such a refreshing change.

The whole store has a great atmosphere and typically sweet customers.

All the reasons I loved Target as a kid are the same reasons I love working there now. On my breaks, I can stop by Starbucks and get a cake pop or walk over to the in-store Pizza Hut and eat a pan pizza. Disclaimer: Not all Target stores have a Starbucks or a Pizza Hut but most of them have a restaurant, referred to as Food Avenue by employees.

Besides the obvious perks of being able to buy anything and everything at work (okay it might also be a bad thing that I can blow my whole paycheck in one 15 minute break), customers at Target are the nicest ones I’ve ever encountered. No, it’s not a walk in the park (it’s still retail), but I’ve had the most genuine interactions at Target as opposed to any other workplace.

Because of how the environment is set up, coworkers get very close very fast.

I’ve been friendly with coworkers at my other jobs, but never anywhere near as close as I am with my Target coworkers. I text them, Snapchat them, follow them on Instagram, and connect with them on Facebook. Everyone is so friendly and I still feel very connected to the coworkers who I don’t talk to outside of work.

That’s another bonus of such an accepting community! We all have each other’s backs no matter what happens, whether someone needs to switch shifts or rant about an unpleasant encounter with a guest.

It’s an incredible feeling to know that your coworkers go through the same things that you do, and that they’ll be there to support you through it all.

With so many different areas in the store, there’s a place for everyone.

Health and Beauty is the perfect area for me because I love interacting with customers while being surrounded by cosmetics. However, the nice thing about Target is that regardless of interest, there is a place in the store that you will thrive in. I applied to be a cashier and quickly realized that it was not the place for me because I love staying busy and helping customers using my knowledge of certain makeup brands and products.

Usually, the Target managers can sense where you’ll belong just from a short interview. I’m so thankful I was open-minded and accepted the position even though it was not where I originally applied.

So, if you’re looking for an amazing job that will make you excited to come to work, you should seriously consider Target. Oh, and another disclaimer: this is not sponsored whatsoever, I really just adore Target.
