Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting

pittsburg synagogue shooting

On Saturday, accused gunman Robert Bowers went into Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue and shot eleven people on Sabbath, the synagogue’s busiest day, with his rifle and handguns.

According to the New York Times, “For months, Bowers had been spewing his anger in post after post on the web, calling immigrants “invaders,” distributing racist memes and asserting that Jews were the “enemy of white people.”

The result of his anger is the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the US.

What This Means

According to Time “The deadly shooting at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue on Saturday heightened a longstanding debate over how best to handle a growing number of security threats against religious institutions otherwise defined by inclusivity and openness.”

President Trump weighed in on the topic stating that this wasn’t an issue of the gun laws in place, but with having security inside the institutions.

With this mind, I don’t think having religious institutions filled with armed guards and security is going to solve this problem. It is much more than that, and getting down to the true meaning behind the incident is what we need look into.

It is scary thinking about how we not safe even practicing our faith anymore. This is the kind of thinking that this event caused. We shouldn’t need protection in the first place when we have the right for freedom of religion as one of our core principles in society.

The Rise Of Hate Crimes

According to Vox, “This shooting comes amid a steady increase in anti-Semitic incidents and hate crimes since the 2016 presidential campaign season and, in particular, the inauguration of Donald Trump.

The FBI found that in 2016, the most recent year for which data was available, there had been an increase of almost 5 percent in hate crimes since 2015, and 10 percent since 2014. Of the 1,273 crimes for which the FBI found a motivation of religious hatred (about 20 percent of the total), half were against Jews.

I feel like there were many problems leading up to this attack and now our society knows that are anti-semitic views out there who are willing to kill. People will do anything to get what they want and we don’t know what will happen.

This attack has made people think back to the Holocaust. Just when people of the Jewish faith thought they were safe to come into this country, this happens. We have come so far as society and this is definitely a setback.

It’s cruel to think there are people filled with so much hate, and let their views get in the way of their heart. Innocent people don’t have to get blamed and killed at all.

I hope we will fix this and learn to love each other regardless of religion. There are so many other issues at stake and killing others because of a certain faith is not one of them. It’s time for some major change.
