I’m fortunate enough that I’ve always been able to go home for the holidays. It’s always a fun challenge to put together winter outfits that blend together current trends with my tried-and-true style, especially for so many different occasions throughout these cold months. It can be tempting to just throw on the old clothes that live in your childhood bedroom, but if I did that, I would be wearing Jonas Brothers t-shirts everyday of the week (which may not be so bad after all…) But putting in a tad more effort can take a fun winter activity or tradition to new style heights, as well as help you find new ways to express yourself, no matter the occasion or weather. Here are five aesthetics for classic holiday times so you can deck the halls with style.
It isn’t winter without this classic beverage. Whether you like your hot chocolate decked out with marshmallows or plain, sipped at home by the fireplace or at your favorite coffee shop, amp up the cozy factor with thick sweaters and basics in neutral tones. Invest in some chocolate-colored beauty essentials, like nail polish or lipstick, to look sweet year-round. Don’t forget a blanket and yummy-smelling candle!
Your style tastes may have matured from when you were a tot, but Christmas morning is still all about having a blast and soaking up the pure joy of time with family. Gather around the tree with candy-colored PJs and fun slipper socks. If you want to keep it sophisticated, go for basic plaids and stripes.
Bust out the frosting, sprinkles, and cutouts. (Or go for store-bought if you’re challenged in the baking department. No judgment.) Holiday baking is more about the fun anyway. Get crazy in the kitchen with soft pastels, cozy leggings and cardigans, and gingerbread accessories while you whip up some cute creations to share with friends and fam (or just for yourself… again, no judgment).
New Year’s Eve
Whether you’re chilling at home, hitting up a sophisticated get-together, or heading to a full-on soiree, ring in the new year with glitz and glam. Dec. 31 is the day for sequin-encrusted clutches, crimson red lipstick, and total princess dresses. If you like a more understated look, go for a monochrome skirt with tights and booties and a glammed-up sweatshirt. Who says fabulous can’t be comfortable?
July has its barbecues, fall has its pumpkin patches, and the holiday season has sledding (or other outdoor fun, if your hometown rarely sees snow). Grab a toboggan, or hit up a skating rink for a date night or fun afternoon with friends. You don’t have to be incredibly athletic, but you can be stylish. Bundle up! Bonus: Pop on a cute beanie and you don’t even have to wash your hair. Easy-breezy beauty is in style any time of the year.
