I’m the type of person who spends hours scouring the Internet for something to do.
It’s a habit. I can’t help it. I like searching anything and seeing what shows up. Most of the time, I end up watching random Youtube videos for hours.
But sometimes, I stumble upon a gem that I just have to share with everyone I know.
I’ve recently found myself enjoying a lot of videos by James Corden, the host of The Late Late Show with James Corden. He’s most well-known for his Carpool Karaoke videos, which you should definitely check out if you get the chance. In these, he takes different celebrities and drives around, usually singing songs written by that celebrity and scaring pedestrians.
He also has other series that he does, including Crosswalk the Musical (where he harasses motorists trying to get to work by breaking out in song and dance in the middle of the road), Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts (to be short, forcing celebrities to eat gross food or tell the world their secrets), and Late Late Live Tinder (pretty much what you think it is).
Out of all of his series, I recently found one that’s quickly become a favorite: his Take a Break series.
With this series, he goes to different stores and organizations to see if one of their employees wants to take a break. Then, he fills in for them. This sounds like it’d be pretty uneventful…if it weren’t for James Corden.
As both a celebrity and a comedian, he turns simple jobs and tasks into something more enthralling. He doesn’t just do the tasks, he attempts to go above and beyond which usually backfires. He breaks rules and interacts with customers a bit more than he should.
The second you think “no…he’d never do that,” he does that.
Some of the victims of his shenanigans include the Savoy Hotel, Pink’s Hotdogs, and a mattress store. At all of these locations, he learns about the various positions the business offers while making a mess. At Pink’s hotdogs, he even goes so far as to create his own hotdog before shouting at customers to buy it.
It doesn’t end there. It’s not just regular citizens he likes to mess with — he also goes for celebrities.
In one video, he takes on the position of The Forum General Manager on the night of the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Concert. He pretty much spends 14 minutes screwing around with different singers including Ed Sheeran, Niall Horan, and Taylor Swift. It’s super entertaining to watch him interact with so many big names while playing the role of manager.
In another, he becomes a member of the Backstreet Boys. He jokingly kicks Brian out of the band and takes his spot for one of their shows, even performing in front of a real audience for their first number. And finally, in one of my favorites in this series, he becomes mayor of Los Angeles for a day.
It really seems like there’s no limit to what he can do. A lot of these titles sound unbelievable. It makes you wonder who on Earth would let him fool around like this. Even so, it’s one of the most entertaining things I’ve found on Youtube.
I’ve always wanted to know what it’d be like to step into the shoes of some of these jobs. A lot of people do. Corden gives everyone the chance to vicariously take these jobs through him.
It’s nice to know that so many people are willing to have fun and allow him in. Even organizations who value their formality let loose a bit. The best ones are where the other workers seriously get into it. In the mattress store video, the store owner ends up having a pillow fight with James and allowing customers to go mattress hopping.
In our society, a lot of online pranks tend to be harmful and humiliating. Especially with the Internet, people are more daring and pull pranks at the expense of others. A lot of Youtube stars have gotten into trouble for it, but there are still so many that get through.
Pranks should be more like what Corden does – silly and simply for humor. His Take a Break series is the perfect example of this. There’s ways to have fun while still respecting everyone. No one should have to be humiliated to have a good time.
So, if you’re bored and browsing the Internet, I’d definitely recommend checking out this series. It’ll keep you wondering what on Earth Corden will do next.
