How to Style Floppy Hats for the Summer

Floppy hats are the quintessential accessory of the summer season. They style an outfit, provide a source of shade, and protect your eyes and skin from the sun. Talk about chic and resourceful!

When I first explored the wonderful world of hats, I had some trouble finding creative ways to pair them with various outfits.

The good news is that these must-have items can top off any look. Their versatility gives them the ability to doll up a casual ensemble or tone down a fancy one.

Take a peek at the lookbook I put together for how I’ll be wearing my favorite hats this summer. Whether you’re in need of a little style inspiration or are looking for a few pointers to get you started on your very own hat escapade, you can find it below!

Simple and Sweet

This is my go-to look for those summer days when I’m not up to much but still want to feel ready! Although one can never go wrong with a classic denim skirt and a white tee, a little accessorizing is necessary.

To spice this outfit up, I pair it with a more dramatic hat. I typically choose one with a pattern or unique texture of some sort so it will be the look’s central element.

The hat in this photo is comprised of grey boucle and a gold metal band around the brim. It gives the outfit a touch of fun while maintaining its effortless feel. Find a similar style at a boutique, such as Francesca’s.

The New Classic

Jumpsuits are all the rage this summer! Whether I’m spending the day at a coffee shop or a night-on-the-town with my girls, I confidently throw one of these on and am ready to go.

While one-pieces stand as masterpieces on their own, a hat is sometimes needed to truly complete the outfit.

One of my favorite looks this season is pairing a felt, floppy hat with a simple or solid colored jumpsuit. It makes the outfit more dynamic by adding an extra element of shape to a simple garment.

I combined two classics, chambray and khaki, in the look above. I live by the ideal that there is elegance in simplicity, and I don’t think that could be truer when it comes to dressing for summer.

Boho Chic

Nothing says summer quite like an off-the-shoulder top and cute hat. This is one of my favorite go-to ensembles this season because it’s a triple threat: cute, casual, and comfy!

The lack of a neckline on these shirts makes them perfect for accessorizing away. I reach for one of my floppy hats whether I pair the top with a skirt or pair of jeans or shorts.

This look evokes a sweet bohemian vibe fit for a music festival or impromptu photoshoot! I turn to Free People or Anthropology for some inspiration when I’m in need of a little boho goodness.

French As Can Be

One can never go wrong with a French Girl style, regardless of the time or weather! A classic, black hat is the perfect accessory for such a look.

This piece is simple yet dramatic and can be paired with almost anything in your closet. I typically pair mine with a flowy t-shirt dress with a neck scarf to drive the French look home. Not to mention it’s fun and flirty enough for a summer day.

A staple hat such as this stands the test of time and may never go out of style! I keep it in my closet throughout the year but find I wear it most during this season to shield my skin from the sun and add a fun element to any of my looks.
