Iconic American fashion designer Betsey Johnson famously says, “girls do not do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves and, of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys they’d just walk around naked at all times.” The designer, known for her feminine, bold designs is an incredibly successful businesswoman and globally renowned fashion designer. While she is the owner of many powerful quotations about female fashion, this one has always stuck with me.
In fact, it’s quite liberating to not worry about what boys find cute.
Lately, it’s been kind of my mantra when going out or even getting ready for class. I’ve become more confident in myself and my appearance the past year, and part of it has definitely been making fashion choices for myself. Some of my closest male friends have told me that they don’t like things like brightly colored nail polish on girls, or seeing girls wear Converse sneakers. Guess what? I like those things. They make me feel fun and cute. In fact, they’re two of my favorite things to wear and accessorize with, and I don’t want to have to worry about if boys are going to find them cute or not. In fact, it’s quite liberating to not worry about what boys find cute. You don’t like it when girls wear makeup? I do. I like spending half an hour perfecting my contour and winged eyeliner every morning. I love getting compliments about how thorough and lovely my makeup looks.
As women in a male-dominated society, it’s important to love and support ourselves, and to love and support each other. The next time you go shopping, or are picking out an outfit for the day, ask yourself what you feel good in. What you feel comfortable in. What you feel happy in. What you feel like yourself in. Those are what’s important. And just remember, girls are going to be able to compliment you on your killer fishtail braid or skater skirt, and it’s going to feel a hell of a lot better than any generic “you’re hot” compliment a guy could ever give you.
