3 DIY Notebooks to Inspire Your Journaling Game

From cover to cover, make your journal totally you.

While we don’t recommend judging a journal by its cover, we never said it couldn’t be crafty! There’s also something really cool about making your own journal by hand, from cover to cover it’s totally you. In this video we show you how to make three types of DIY notebooks: one with cute fabric, one with a chalkboard cover, and one with exotic paper. Just choose the cover and size that inspires you and get journaling!

DIY Notebooks Tutorial

Fabric Notebook

Supplies
2 pieces of Chipboard
Writing paper
2 pieces of construction paper
Fabric
Awl
Waxed linen thread
Scissors
Felt
X-acto knife
Glue (Fabric glue, E6000 or Elmer’s will do)

Directions
1. Fold paper in half and use awl to punch holes into spine.
2. Pass thread though spine. When both pieces of thread are outside of booklet, knot and cut. Repeat process if you would like more pages in book.
3. Glue booklet to thin strip of construction paper.
4. From the chipboard, cut out two flaps that match the size of paper and a thin spine.
5. Glue both rectangles and spine to fabric.
6. Fold and glue excess fabric until flaps are over chipboard, let dry for 30 minutes.
7. Glue booklet to chipboard.
8. Glue construction paper to inside of covers.
9. Let dry completely before use, 24 hours is a good amount of time!

Chalkboard Cover Notebook

Supplies
2 pieces of Chipboard
Chalkboard paint
Foam paint brush
Writing paper
Exotic paper
Awl
Waxed linen thread
Scissors
Felt
X-acto knife
Glue (Fabric glue, E6000 or Elmer’s will do)

Directions
1. Measure and cut out 3 identical rectangles for the cover of book.
2. Measure out 1 thin rectangle to serve as the spine.
3. Glue 1 rectangle and spine onto the felt. You can do both rectangles + spine at the same time if your prefer, might lead to more trimming of your paper though.
4. Cut writing paper so that when folded in half, it fits in your felt chipboard cover.
5. Use awl to make spine holes.
6. Pass thread through spine, when both pieces of thread are on the outside of the booklet, knot and cut.
7. Glue booklet to the spine of book, hold in place for 5 minutes.
8. Glue 2nd rectangle onto felt so that when folded over, it aligns with the edge of the booklet.
9. Place exotic paper on chipboard.
10. Glue down flaps of felt onto chipboard, feel free to cut off excess, dry for 10 minutes.
11. Paint 3rd rectangle with chalkboard paint, dry for 1 hour. Repeat with a second layer of paint.
12. Glue board to felt, wait 24 hours before using!

Exotic Paper Notebook

Supplies
Exotic paper
Writing paper
Awl
Waxed linen thread
Scissors

Directions
1. Cut exotic paper to make cover (remember that you will be folding in half).
2. Cut large sheets of writing paper to desired shape, fold in half and place into your cover.
3. Use awl to make 3 spine holes at fold, or staple for faster process.
4. Pass thread through holes, once both threads are on the outside of the book, cut and knot
5. Make more!
