For Your Music Monday, Meet Metiza’s Own Hawa Sako of Browni

Making it in the music industry is all about taking chances.

When she’s not making awesome DIY videos,  Princeton grad Hawa Sako is living in San Francisco and fronting the bi-coastal band Browni. She and her bandmate Kovey Coles, who lives in New York, write, record,  and produce sweet, soulful sounds together – even from 3,000 miles away. How badass is that? Check out our interview with Hawa and their new EP on Spotify below!

When did you and Kovey decide to start Browni?

Kovey and I decided to start Browni our junior year of college, so about 3 years ago now.

Where did the concept of your new video, Beloved, come from?

We wanted to show our solidarity with everyone suffering from police violence and to support the women in our communities who are dealing with the deaths of their brothers, husbands, fathers and sons.

What’s the oddest place you’ve ever written or have been inspired to write a song?

I guess the craziest place I’ve been inspired to write was on a beach in Costa Rica after seeing a sea turtle that had been killed by a jaguar.

How would you describe your songwriting process?

Sometimes I come up with a melody and lyrics and Kovey adds music to it. Other times Kovey will play me a beat and I’ll improvise on it until I come up with something we both like.

What’s your dream festival lineup?

Dream lineup: Sevdaliza, Shakira, Rihanna, J.Cole, Mick Jenkins, Badbadnotgood, Jessie Reyez, Lauryn Hill (Hopefully she won’t be 2 hours late ;)), Sabrina Claudio, Beyonce <3 , Chance the Rapper

Do you have any advice for all the Metiza girls out there who want to start a band but don’t know where to start?

For anyone who wants to make a band, find people who are passionate about music, and just try. Be open to creating a group sound that may be different from your solo work. Making music is like building a relationship, be open to collaborating… but if you find that it doesn’t work, be willing to let go and try with different people.  Prior to meeting Kovey, I experimented with 3 different, unsuccessful collaborations. Sometimes it takes time, but now I’m in this amazing duo and we’ve kept it alive even though we are on two different coasts.

Be sure to keep up with Browni on Facebook, BandCampSoundCloud, and Instagram, too!
