An Open Letter to My First Apartment

Here's what you should know before I move in

Dear First Apartment,

You don’t know me yet, but I’m bursting with excitement just thinking about meeting you. Two young gals by the names Aly and Emily will be living between your walls in just a few weeks.

I know you may be feeling a bit empty at the moment, but don’t you worry, we won’t be coming empty-handed. I’ll bring boxes filled with decor, clothing, and more to adorn you with. In fact, I may just bring too many things…oops!

Although to you, I may be just another person occupying you for the year, you mean a great deal to me. You are the first apartment I am ever living in. I will finally have my very own space to live and grow, and it’s all thanks to you.

You might be wondering what I’m going to make you look like. Well, there’s no reason to fret; I’ve been compiling a Pinterest board all summer of how I plan to decorate you, so you’re sure to be cute and cozy!

Pictures of my family and friends will scatter your walls, and pretty plants will be placed among your floors and countertops. Your colors will be white and grey with pops of pink here and there!

Your kitchen will be filled with plenty of foods and snacks to get my roommate and me through the days and extra long nights. Mugs and cups of all sorts will sit within your cabinets waiting for us coffee and tea fanatics to fill them up at all hours of the day. Let’s be honest, we’re going to need plenty of caffeine-kicks to get us through the year.

I know you’ll take care of Aly and me just as much as we will you! You’re our home for the next 300-something days – the place where we’ll not only sleep and eat but where we’ll make memories to last a lifetime. There’s no doubt tears will be shed between your walls whether due to stress, sadness, or too many laughs. Plenty of smiles and moments of joy will take place, too.

You’ll be there through it all, including the late nights (or early mornings depending on how you look at it) when we’re struggling to keep our heavy eyes open finishing up work. You’ll see the mood swings, venting sessions, and fits of stress we all know come with college at times.

You’re the place we’ll look forward to coming home to after a long day of work. We already know we’ll be thrilled to dive on the couch and under the covers when the day is done.

Most importantly, you’ll see two young women grow little by little through it all. You’re always going to be the first apartment that we’ll talk about for a lifetime to come.

There’s only a few more weeks before we get your keys and can walk inside for the first time. We can’t wait to fill you with laughs, music, and memories. Stay put, we’ll be there soon!
