Make the Most of Spring Break While Staying Local

A list of inspiration for enjoying your break at home

Students pack up their cars for cross-state road trips. Swimsuit and beach photos bombard your Instagram feed. Young adults everywhere are having the time of their lives, being adventurous without a care in the world.

It’s Spring Break.

While many people travel near and far during their week off, some students settle to stay local whether due to financial restrictions, protective parents, or the simple desire for some downtime.

Seeing the Snapchat stories and photos of peers on vacation while you’re stuck at home watching reruns of the Kardashians may not be the break you had in mind. You may feel left out of the fun you are meant to be having as a thriving adolescent.

Staying at home does not necessarily mean you are destined for a week of boredom. It’s time to stop counting down the days before you go back to school and get out the house. An open mind and a little creativity can go a long way and may just redefine that dream spring break of yours.

Regardless of how you choose to spend your spring break, the most important thing is to make time for yourself and some greatly deserved relaxation and rejuvenation.

Here’s some Inspo to get you started

Have a photo shoot with friends…

Take this time to spice up your Insta game. You may not be on a tropical getaway, but there are plenty of photo ops around town.

Grab some girlfriends and a couple of your favorite outfits, and pretend you are the latest contestants on America’s Next Top Model. Not only will you have fun photos to post on social media, but you will also have documentation of memories with your favorite people.

You can even make a day out of it by driving around to find unique backgrounds and features. Murals, coffee shops, and even the middle of the desert make for aesthetically-pleasing photoshoot locations.

Coffee shop catch-up…

A little “you time” is always a good idea. Hop around your favorite coffee shops to catch-up on all the little things you’ve been putting on the back burner.

Grab a chai tea latte and read your favorite blog posts and magazines, journal, or for those who have more self-discipline, get ahead on homework. Having this alone time will allow you to get your thoughts in order and focus on yourself and the moment.

For those who enjoy journaling, here is a list of writing topics to consider and reflect upon, provided by Misty Sansom:

  • One thing I’ve always wished for is…
  • One thing I know I need to work on is…
  • The skill I’ve always wanted to have is…
  • The best bit of advice I could give to a younger me is…
  • When people first meet me, I hope they feel…
Small Business Shopping…

A trip to the mall is an obvious “must” for every spring break, but you can reinvent your shopping experience by venturing around local boutiques and businesses.

While the mall has several stores found nationwide, local fashion companies stock clothing and trends that are unique to their own city. You’ll find one-of-a-kind pieces that would otherwise be unavailable to you.

Most clothing sold in these stores is designed and manufactured locally, which ensures you are investing in ethical rather than fast fashion companies, as well as supporting businesses that are trying to grow.

Another way to shop local is to spend time at flea and farmer’s markets. These events are especially popular during the springtime and bring a variety of centrally-made products to one place. You can find everything from clothing to produce to art and more.

DIY Spa Day…

Use this time off to invest in your body and soul. Spend a day to pamper yourself with a spa day that includes a manicure and pedicure, massage, or facial.

You do not have to break the bank at a spa in order to treat yourself. Plenty of hacks exist to give you the relaxing day you deserve without spending a pretty penny. Pour yourself a glass of fruit-infused water and get to mixing ingredients for a detoxifying face mask.

Spring Clean…

Although this may not be the most fun option on this list, spring cleaning is an essential part of ridding your life of stress and clutter.

Turn on some music and break into those drawers that have not seen the light of day in months. Reflect upon your belongings and separate them into piles based on what you truly need and may unnecessarily be holding onto.

This cleaning process does not just have to be about your room. Go through your phone and delete photos, applications and contacts taking up precious space. Sift through your school folders and toss the papers you no longer use. Do whatever you need to feel put together and organized.
