Summer travels, extra sun exposure, lax eating habits and late nights can all take a toll on our skin. It’s no secret that the key to healthy skin starts with great skin care, but with so many products on the market, it’s hard to know where to start. Not to mention that many products can be crazy expensive – it’s difficult to navigate what you should splurge on vs. find a cheaper version. Here are a few tried and true products to help keep skin in its best shape while getting ready to head back to school. Best part, they are wallet-friendly at $30 or under a pop.
Here are 4 Products to Help Get Skin in Shape for School
We all know the golden rule of beauty: Never sleep with your makeup on. Forgo cleansing and you may end up with pimples, clogged pores, puffy red eyes, or worse, wrinkles! A quick 3-minute cleanse can take off the day’s makeup and helps to keep skin healthy. Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser ($12) has been around for ages and is quite possibly the simplest cleanser I’ve ever come across. It cleans skin while leaving it moisturized and best of all you won’t break your budget buying it.
Another great option is Grown Alchemist Body Cleanser ($30). It contains chamomile, bergamot and rosewood, all of which smell amazing and leave your skin clean and refreshed without causing dryness.
Did you know that clay has amazing purifying properties? Masks (and cleansers) made with clay help to draw out impurities and leave skin glowing. I am loving this one from Baxter of California ($24). Like a detox for your skin, simply apply a small layer over your cleansed face and neck leave on for 10 minutes. Wash off and skin feels marvelously smooth. Bonus: the tube is uber-cute and will look great displayed in your medicine cabinet (because that is important too, right?)
After cleansing, use a cotton pad or ball to apply a thin layer of toner to skin. Toner is great for acne-prone skin because sometimes a single cleanse doesn’t go deep enough. Gone are the days of toners that strip skin of essential oils and leave it feeling tight. Murad has an awesome toner made from natural ingredients that gives skin that extra clean feeling while keeping it full of moisture. Made from a combo of natural botanicals and witch hazel, this toner is a smart step in your skin care regime.
If you are prone to acne, I am going to introduce you to one of the best kept secrets of the beauty industry: Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. The bottle is $17 and lasts surprising long for its size. It is made from a unique formula of calamine, salicylic acid, sulfur, zinc oxide and more. Use after cleaning skin by dipping a Q-tip into the sediment in the bottle, and applying a dab directly to your blemish. The formula dries the pimple but not the skin around it. While in life there are few quick fixes, this drying lotion zaps zits overnight. No more pre-prom freak-outs!
When it comes to finding an effective skin care routine, sometimes trial and error is the only way to find out what works best. As hormones and seasons change, so does your skin, so products that may have worked for you in the past don’t seem to be effective. Keep trying. And remember, it is ok to switch up your routine too. Sometimes you’ll find you get better results when you don’t stick to a strict multiple-step program. They great news is there are tons of affordable products on the market that will help you get healthy skin before it’s time to say hello to textbooks and exams.
