Love Yourself First: A Valentine’s Day Playlist for Independent Women

A mix of badass female artists for single ladies and in-love folks alike!

Valentine’s Day has been branded as a day for people to spend money on cards, chocolate and expensive dates. But just as Metiza said last year, we want to rebrand Valentine’s Day to be more than the status quo. V-Day can be about celebrating self-love and independence. Just because you’re in a relationship doesn’t mean you aren’t independent! Whether you’re spending this Valentine’s Day alone or with a partner, this playlist of independent women is perfect to celebrate with.

This playlist features love songs and songs about loving yourself on your own.

Alternating back and forth, there are songs about being in love as well as getting over heartbreak and loving yourself. There are some jams capturing the joy and excitement of love like “Say My Name” by Tove Styrke, “The Louvre” by Lorde and “Cut To The Feeling” by Carly Rae Jepsen.

Go ahead and feel what you feel. I want you closer to me. Say my name, wear it out like a sweater that you love.

On the other side, there are songs about picking yourself up and going strong on your own. This playlist features some iconic hits like “Stronger” by Britney Spears, “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay” by Whitney Houston and “No Scrubs” by TLC. All the parts of love, including the heartbreak after, are necessary parts of life worth experiencing. Plus, we get some great music out of it.

Close the door behind you leave your key. I’d rather be alone than unhappy.

You can listen to this playlist while getting over someone, at a Galentine’s Day party with your friends, or with your partner before going out on a date. Even if you’re not celebrating the cookie-cutter definition of love, there’s a way to happily celebrate Valentine’s Day. Celebrate your friendships, your familial love or what you love about yourself — and do it with a great soundtrack.
