There is No Reward in Playing Small

How to get out of your comfort zone and play BIG in 2018!

Simply put, your playing small does not serve the world. If anything it encourages others to settle, to stay the same, to conform to what’s around them instead of striving to reach their full potential.

Here’s a quote I love which helps puts this into perspective:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -Marianne Williamson

So how can we start playing big and shine our light? Here’s a few ways we can start being courageous and putting ourselves out there for the world to see.

Be selfish.

Being selfish is okay. Despite what people might tell you. As long as you’re not doing harm to anyone, looking out for yourself and what’s best for you is completely okay and healthy. I wish I would’ve known this all along. Listen to your gut. A lot of people will say do this because it’s easy, it’s safe, it’s secure, it’ll make you money etc. But if your heart’s not in it, it’s not your calling. This would be playing small.

Know your beliefs and honor them.

Identifying our values and being committed to them – even when it is uncomfortable or challenging– will bring about a meaningful, more fulfilled life. Knowing your values and what is important to you will help you make decisions, take action, and stay focused on moving towards the life we want to live.

Be yourself and go for it!

I think a lot of times what stops us from moving forward or going after something big is thinking about what other people will think or say about what you decide to do or go after.

Here’s the reality of it: You will always be too much for some people, and that’s okay!

I remember being really scared to put myself out there because I wanted everyone to like me. What I later realized was that I was selling myself short and not being true to myself. At the end of the day, you’ve only got one life to live. Don’t be that person that reflects back and thinks “I should’ve gone for it.”

Be honest with yourself and ask the right questions.

Self-awareness is key. Being honest with yourself about your goals brings awareness to your productivity and taking inventory of your day.

A simple question you can ask yourself is:
What actions (big or small) were taken today that moves me closer to my goal?

If you don’t have an answer to that question and know you just binged watched your favorite show on Netflix for the past week then you know you need to be honest with yourself and start making some changes. There’s nothing wrong with watching Netflix, but if you know you’re ready to play big, there are some sacrifices that need to be made.

Playing big requires discipline and hard work. Save Netflix as a special reward for yourself once you’ve completed your task for the day 😉

Here’s what Ashlee Moss, lifestyle blogger & entrepreneur, had to say about not playing small in 2018!

When you decide to play small that requires no effort, no dedication, no passion, or no purpose. Which in return gets you no reward. Society doesn’t teach you how important it is to go the extra mile and live outside your comfort zone.

When you go the extra mile it requires you to be BIGGER than everyone else around you.

People start to notice and watch you because you are doing what most people will never do. Going the extra mile usually comes with a reward, you might not see it right away but it always comes.

Living outside your comfort zone also requires you to be the BIGGER person.

You have to look at what the masses do and do the complete opposite. This is definitely hard to do because we love to live based on the things that make us feel good and comfortable. Unfortunately that’s why playing small is what most people like to do, it’s what is familiar.

Once you start letting your walls down and become open, new opportunities, new adventures and new experiences come about. You’ll start to see the reward in living outside your comfort zone.

I challenge you everyday to think about how you can go the extra mile for someone and how you can continue to live outside your comfort zone. There is absolutely NO REWARD in playing small and living a mediocre life. You are beautiful and have so much to experience and explore! Get out there and do what you love with passion and excitement and believe you are capable of living the life you dream of!
