What Are Your Chakras and Why Do They Need Balancing?

Mind, body, spirit balance. It's all about the energy flow.

Do you ever wonder what connects you to the rest of the Universe?  That mystical, unseen link that allows you to feel and interact on a deeper level with other beings, animals, and plants?  We are able to connect and relate to other sentient beings because of something we all have in common, a chakra system.

Now you may have heard of the term chakra in a yoga class, but do you actually know what it is?

The word chakra is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning “wheel” or “disc”, referring to the shape and movement it makes when operating properly. While people may think of this concept as “new age” it is far from it, first being discussed thousands of years ago in the Hindu texts, the Vedas.

Typically when discussing chakras, people will refer to the seven major chakras by their location in the body: root, Sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. However, traditional texts indicate that there are thousands of chakras located throughout the body, each one acting as a connection point between the physical body and energetic bodies.

The physical body is exactly what you think it is — the one made of flesh, tissue and bones. The energetic bodies are comprised of an integrated system of meridians and chakras that mirror the physical body, often referred to as a biofield or aura. Meridians are most often referred to in the context of acupuncture, but are simply a set of pathways along which energy flows, much like how a vein guides blood throughout the body.

It’s all about energy flow.

As I describe in my book, Shift Happens! 21 Days to Better Energy Through the Chakras, “think of a chakra like a faucet, if the chakra is obstructed, it can impede the flow of energy causing blockages and lead to decreased or even no chakra function at all.” Just as too much or too little blood flow in the physical body can be dangerous, the same can be said about the amount of energy flow in the energy bodies.

Similar to the idea that a bathroom sink and a shower head wouldn’t benefit from having the same amount of water pressure, each chakra point has an optimal frequency or energy level at which it can best maintain proper functionality.  When the chakras are open and operating at the proper frequency, the body can function as a whole creating the greatest opportunity for optimal health and happiness.

Keeping the chakras open and operating at the proper levels is something to be consistently mindful about as energy throughout the body can shift almost instantaneously. Have you ever walked into a room and felt that you could cut the tension with a knife? Even though you likely couldn’t see anything, your body was able to feel the dense and heavy energy surrounding it, making you feel physically uncomfortable.

People, places, conversations or moods can all impact your energy and your chakras.  For this reason, It’s especially important to be mindful of the company you choose to keep, and what you choose to let into your space (television, music, news, etc.).

Luckily, there are many different ways to nourish your chakras and maintain healthy energy throughout your all your bodies.  Much as they nourish your physical body, healthful eating, exercise and meditation are all great ways to keep your chakras balanced. Yoga asanas, or poses, were actually created with the intention of moving energy throughout the body, perfectly supporting optimal chakra health.

Nature is a fantastic support when it comes to balancing all of the chakras simultaneously.

Getting outside, taking in fresh air and sunshine for a few minutes a day can do wonders to replenish your natural energy reserves and soothe your chakras; sunshine encompasses the entire color spectrum so it balances all the chakras at the same time.

Water is one of the most versatile tools when it comes to balancing the chakras all together. Proper hydration is an essential aspect of moving energy throughout the body. Showers can be used as a meditative exercise by envisioning the water washing away tensions or stressors as the water moves down your body. Salt baths are an essential part of my go-to self care routine when I’ve been working with large groups or out in public spaces.

Another perfect tool to balance all of the chakras together is a clear quartz crystal.

Since the clear quartz acts as a prism, bringing alive all of the colors in the spectrum, the stone’s master healer properties lends itself to each of the chakras.  This stone can be used in meditation or even in a piece of jewelry so that it is constantly helping to replenish chakra energy.

Since each chakra is unique and will resonate with different concepts and ideas, every month I will be going more in depth into each of the seven major chakras. Next month I’ll start at the base of the chakra system, discussing the root chakra and giving you practical tips on how to nourish this energy center.
