The Trump Administration is Attempting to Redefine Gender

And undoing years of civil rights work from the Obama administration

The Trump administration is attempting to define one’s gender as a biological condition determined by their genitalia at birth. And any dispute will have to be shown through a genetic test.

The Trump administration will unravel a series of policies put in place by the Obama administration which included progressive legislation in LGBTQ rights. They recognized gender largely as an individual’s personal choice and not defined by genitalia at birth.

The Department of Health and Human Services argued that government agencies need to adopt a uniform definition of gender which should be determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.” Specifically, as only male or female.

1.4 million Americans are now alienated – those who recognize themselves as a gender other than the body they were born with.

The government dismisses what the medical community understands about its patients and what people understand about themselves and creates legislation that will negatively impact millions of people. Catherine E. Lhamon, who led the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights in the Obama administration, agrees that this will exclude a large population for the civil rights protections she and the Obama administration worked hard to enact.

People in the LGBTQ community are afraid.

Micah, a member of the Downtown ASU campus LGBTQ club, Confetti, says that they were not surprised that this is the next line of civil rights the Trump administration is trying to break down. That it was only a matter of time.

They said, “People are just realizing we have to deal with these guys and now we have to band together and find a community and support.” They go on to say that it is “scary as hell,” that people of the LGBTQ community will not get the basic rights they deserve.

They want everyone facing these challenges to know “we’ve been through worse and we’ve come out stronger. This is just another bump in the road.”

After a year of discussions, the health and human services will present the new definition to the Justice Department before the end of the year.

Even if the Trump administration attempts to define transgender people out of existence, they will still be here. It’s comparable to defining the stars or the sun out of existence. What they are trying to do is close their eyes and ignore more than a million people – alienate those who don’t fit their narrow-minded idea of “normal.”

But time will prove that the LGBTQ community will not be ignored.
