Mel Wells is best known as the author of the best-selling book, . But her road to being featured on Forbes Under 30 and becoming a world leader in the anti-diet and body positivity entails much more than you probably think.
Not Everything’s What It Seems
Earlier in her career, when she went by Melissa Walton, Mel Wells played Loretta Jones on UK-based soap opera Hollyoaks.
On the surface Mel had it all. Beauty, romance and a blooming career in show business. Behind the scenes, however, she had been struggling with eating disorders for over 6 years.
The binging, purging, and obsessive exercise that Wells practiced only worsened when her father found himself diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In order to ease his symptoms and look for a cure, she began actively researching information regarding nutrition.
Unfortunately, her research only changed what Mel was eating, not how. She still was bulimic, but now Mel would instead binge on health foods instead of processed.
Growth in Tragedy
It wasn’t until Mel’s father passed in 2012 that she really began realizing how much she needed to turn her life around.
Mel began thinking of having children of her own with her former husband, and imagined being pregnant. She then realized what she was currently doing to her body. In an interview with Zoe Blaskey she stated,
I thought how can I have a baby; how can I go through a pregnancy when I’m abusing my body like this? Mentally and physically. If I’m not prepared to do that with a baby in me, then why am I doing it to myself? It was that moment that changed everything for me.
From there forward, Mel committed herself to a lifestyle of listening to her body and, more importantly, loving it. She strives to encourage other women to do the same through ditching dieting and healing their relationships with food and themselves. Mel preaches health at all sizes.
A Growing Empire
Wells now works as a certified health coach, eating psychology coach and author.
In 2016, Wells published her first book The Goddess Revolution. This book focuses on the premise of
…finding yourself at your perfect weight, in your perfect body and feeling happier and freer around food than ever before.
Mel also hosts retreats worldwide currently offering them in locations such as Shropshire, Maldives and Bali. The retreats include plant-based meals prepared by a chef, daily yoga classes, spa treatments, and workshops with Mel to improve your relationship with your body and food.
Adding to the list of her many feats, Wells has her own clothing brand called .
Currently, Wells travels worldwide speaking at various wellness events. She’s also currently promoting the release of her next book, . Mel says,
This book is a call for the ones who want to go deeper into those hidden messages around food and cravings, and in doing so, unlock a gateway to limitless spiritual and personal growth.
Mel has overcome significant obstacles and continues to grow in her influence in the wellness industry.
