Beginning Meditation And Managing Your Anxiety

Ever since high school, I have had a problem with anxiety and I’m slowly starting to manage it. Its a tough thing to do, but recently I have found that meditation is helping. Whether its 10 minutes or even up to an hour, if you’re looking for something to help you relax, meditation will make a difference.

Headspace is an app that you can download on your phone and its really easy to use. They have different meditation sessions for different problems. For example, they have sessions on curbing your hunger, depression, and even a basic series that you can start if you’re curious.

I started the anxiety sessions and it has made such a huge difference. I’ve always wanted to start meditation but never really got around to it. So once I actually began, I felt more relaxed and motivated to not let anxiety get the best of me.

Anxiety is a common problem and I recommend this app to anyone who is trying to manage it. If not for anxiety specifically, there are many other sessions that you can check out.

Simple Meditation for Beginners

If you’re not the app kind of person and want to get into your surroundings, theres a simple practice you can do for beginners:

According to Gaiam:

This meditation exercise is an excellent introduction to meditation techniques.

  1. Sit or lie comfortably. You may even want to invest in a meditation chair or cushion.
  2. Close your eyes.
  3. Make no effort to control the breath; simply breathe naturally.
  4. Focus your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation. Notice the movement of your body as you breathe. Observe your chest, shoulders, rib cage, and belly. Simply focus your attention on your breath without controlling its pace or intensity. If your mind wanders, return your focus back to your breath.

Maintain this meditation practice for two to three minutes to start, and then try it for longer periods.

I have tried this practice also and it has the same effects. There is no better way so choose what works for yourself. There are other options for anxiety shared by Madison here.

Benefits of Meditation

Meditation has a lot benefits and I researched this before I wanted to start practicing. I wanted to know what specifically it had to offer so I read a lot on health sites and others who began it for the same reason I did. Here is what I found:

According to Healthline, meditation can:

  • Reduce stress
  • Control anxiety
  • Lengthen attention span
  • Help fight addictions
  • Improve sleep
  • Decrease blood pressure

As a kid in high school, I tried everything I could to try to control the anxiety I had. Nothing really worked. I am glad that I found mediation because without it, I think it would have got worse. I think everyone should make their mental and physical health a priority because it really does matter.

Try the simple meditation routine if you’re stuck on where to start and then build your way up. It will help I promise.
