10 Things I’d Rather Be Than Pretty. I’m So Much More.

This week as I was scrolling through Facebook I noticed that a friend of mine shared an article called, “20 Things I’d Rather Be Than ‘Pretty’.” I stopped scrolling and just stared at the title for a moment. A thought came to mind. I, too, would much rather be other things than just pretty. Yes, pretty is still on my list, but when I come to think of it, it’s low on my list of priorities. How pretty I am only goes skin deep, and I have so much more to offer than just beauty.

So I decided to make my own list of things I want to be known for than simply being “pretty.”
1. Loving

I want to be known for my loving heart, a heart so powerful it was able to forgive the unforgivable and accept the unacceptable. I want to have love be what I live by, and I want others to feel loved by me. I may be different and disagree with others, but I hope that my love is always able to be seen through.

2. Determined

When others see me, I want them to see the fire in my eyes and my passionate heart. I want them to see me following my dreams and never giving up, no matter what others say. I also want be a spark that lights up the fire in other’s hearts and reminds them that they can reach their goals. I will never give up my dreams.

3. Unique

I want to be known as weird and different. I used to hate to be called such things, but now I know that these things are what make me unique and special. I never want to be known as someone who follows the crowd and does what everyone else is doing. I want to go against the current, follow my own path, and make my own name for myself.

4. Accepting

I want others to know that I will accept them for who they are. I will accept their flaws, accept their fears, and listen to their stories. I never want to be known as someone who thought she was better than everyone else and didn’t care enough to humble herself. I am here on this earth to accept others and help them, and that is what I want to do.

5. Influential

I want to leave a lasting mark on this earth, and I won’t stop until I do so. I don’t want my name plastered on billboards, I want to have my words ingrained in many hearts, reminding them that they are valued, worthy, and more than enough. My face may be forgotten, but I hope that my love is always remembered.

6. Trustworthy

The greatest honor to me would be to have others trust me enough to tell me their most vulnerable stories, to trust me enough to open up to me and show me their true selves. I am always here for everyone, and I want others to know that.

7. Approachable

I value the courage it takes for someone to be 100% themselves, and I want to provide people a space to do so. I hope that my smile allows everyone to feel invited to approach me.

8. Upbeat

I don’t want to be seen as always positive, because I’m not. Just like you, I have my good and bad days. But I do want to be known as someone who kept a cheerful smile during the hard times and was the light during the storms. I want to be known for having an upbeat heart, and someone who always tries to see the brighter side of things.

9. Understanding

This goes with accepting, but I also want others to know that I, too, can understand their struggles. I want them to know I’ve been through tough stuff as well, and that I can relate to life’s hardships. And because I have my own unique story, I will try my best to place myself in their shoes and do my best to understand where they’re coming from.

10. Perfectly Flawed

I am not perfect, and that’s what makes me human. I want others to hold me to high standards but not impossible ones. I have cracks, scars, and blemishes, and all of them make me who I am. I hope that through my cracks you can see the light shining from within me. I hope that with my scars you can see that you are not alone. I hope with my blemishes that you can see that you don’t have to be perfect to be confident and worth it!

I hope one day, if not already, that you know that you are so much more than just “pretty.”

Your turn! Make a list of 5 to 10 qualities you want to be remembered for. When you physically write this qualities down, it will help hold you accountable to them. You are so much more than pretty, so show the world what else you have to offer!
