Trump Announced Transgender People Will Not Serve in Military.

At the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump said, “I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens.” On Wednesday, July 26, President Trump announced that Transgender people will not be allowed in the military. He decided (unsurprisingly) to announce military policy via Twitter. Because that’s appropriate.

This decision reverses President Obama’s policy, which allowed transgender people to serve in the military. Obama’s policy required “years of efforts to eliminate barriers to military service based on sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Trump’s decision shocked both the Pentagon and the White House press office. The pentagon was still in the process of researching the effects of transgender people in the military, and Trump acted three months before the Pentagon finished this research. He received criticism from many Conservatives in his party, proving once again that even his own people are against him. Chrissy Teigen speaks the truth.

Republican senator and war veteran John McCain said, “We should all be guided by the principle that any American who wants to serve our country and is able to meet the standards should have the opportunity to do so — and should be treated as the patriots they are.”

The RAND Corporation, a non-profit committed to providing objective research services, conducted research about transgender people in the military in 2016. RAND found that the “tremendous medical costs and disruption” Trump speaks of would have “marginal impact on health care costs and the readiness of the force.” Sorry, Mr. President, but you’re wrong.

Please read Angela Dumlao’s article, To the Cis Person Angrily Sharing News of the Trump transgender military ban. Dumlao says, “This is not a future hypothetical in which we need to protect people who want to be in the military. There are trans military serving as we speak. There are trans veterans waking up to this news.”

A policy that brought so much hope to the transgender community just disappeared. If you are a cisgender person, now is the most important time to learn how to be an ally. Dumlao said, “You likely won’t get Trump to stop being terrible. But you can look in the mirror and be better.” Learn more about what it means to be transgender here.
